Well it's been a couple days now since the Daft Punk show so I figured I would inform you all of what happened. Let's start from the beginning...
Woke up on Sunday kind of late so as to offset the sleep deprivation I would encounter for the night. Went to grab some gas and a couple of drinks before Brian made it to my place and then head for Toronto. On my way back, getting out of my car to head into the apartment, my ear decides to de(re?)pressurize; effectively muffling what I can hear. It happens occasionally so I didn't think much of it. Brian shows, we hit the road and set for Toronto.
On the way we have the AC going and all of the sudden the air stops being cool and starts being warm. Looking down at my engine temp, the needle was a little less than the big H. This and the guy next to me saying I'm leaking something, causes us to pull over to take a look. Popped the hood take a glance at my coolant level and see that there is a little bit of liquid around it. Tighten up the cap, and another cap that seemed loose and head back out.
We make it into Canada and the temp starts rocketing up again. Another stop. I call my dad , a mechanic, for his advice and take a look at the coolant level. Now, this is just a tip for everyone, when you check your coolant level...make sure your coolant tank doesn't have grime on the inside that makes your level appear normal. The quick glance from before was apparently not valid, I was very low on coolant. After filling up the rest of the tank with water (it's ok to do this in the summer), we got back on the road again. The rest of the trip went fine.
We made it Toronto at around 5, the doors opened at 7, so we grabbed a bite to eat and then started our search for beer. We found a little mart that didn't have anything so we asked where we could find something. Apparently, you can only really find beer at 'beer stores' and the only one around closed...at 5. So we back-tracked to a pub we had passed. Closed. Next to the pub though was a restaurant that served beer. We grabbed one, relaxed, and finally headed to the show.
The line was pretty damn long, but that's to be expected for a show that hasn't been to North America in about 10 years. We started talking with one of the guys, Sean, in front of us who was pretty cool. Born in Canada with relatives in the states. Finally got into the venue, effectively a hangar with a stage in it, and got another beer. The DJ's that were spinning between The Rapture and Daft Punk were pretty damn impressive, if I do say so.
The Rapture was pretty good. I had heard some of their stuff before so it was entertaining. They definitely didn't overshadow the robots though.
The DJ's spun. The music stopped. The lights went out. All eyes looked to the stage to see the robots emerge from the smoke in a pyramid of lights. It was complete craziness as we watched an incredible light-show ensue with the music that we've heard and loved for the better part of a decade. What else can I say besides this: Un-fucking-believable. I don't thin k I stopped moving once the music started. They played a plethora of my favorites as well as combining some of them into a fantastic collage.
After they finished their set, we weren't quite done with them. "Daft Punk. Daft Punk. Daft Punk", was all you could here. They appeared again, this time with their suits lit up, and everyone went crazy. All in all it was one of the greatest shows I have been to and I can finally mark them off the list. My only quam: my ear never readjusted itself. I could still hear them...so no big deal.
My recommendation:
If Daft Punk is playing remotely close to you...please, please go see them.
